The Patterns we've been waiting for showed up at the door yesterday. Oh Happy day!
Both the Mini Dress/ Tunic/ top and the Field Bag and Tote patterns look easy to sew.

I am having a hard time deciding WHICH I want to make first. I will be sewing the Mini Dress/Tunic in the Wildflowers - Turquoise fabric which is featured on the pattern cover. Amy Butler likes it and so do I!

Amy Butler SUN SURF HALTER sewn & ready for summer!

I've blogged on the Sun Surf Halter pattern by Amy Butler before, but wanted to share these latest versions. Fabric for this one : Sweet Jasmine - natural from the Daisy Chain collection.

Great fabric choice to show off a fake or real suntan!



In the corner of this picture is a glimpse of the garden and the beginning of a tasty fresh tomato sandwich! Makes my mouth water just thinking about it.
Fabric used : Dandelion Fields- rose

Do not wear this style if you have a hairy back.

Sewing a Pink Fig Cuppy Cake dress

I've sewn the Pink Fig Cuppy Cake dress more than once & each time felt as if I were creating a bouquet with flowers!
Each panel combines to make the panels next to it prettier, much the same as flowers in a bouquet.

I wanted this particular dress to be soft and feminine. These Daisy Chain and Midwest Modern 2 fabrics were selected. Making the selection is the hard part of creating this dress.

Each panel making up the dress skirt is top stitched. You'll probably want to use the same thread for all top stitching. Be sure select a thread color which will blend well with all of the fabric panels.

My serger sits next to my machine, which allows me to sew the seam, slide to the serger for finishing the raw edges quickly. I laid out the order of my prints, divided them into smaller sections.

Rather than handling a long strip with 16 panels, I had smaller sections to work with & joined them after each section was completed. You don't have to do it that way, but it seemed less cumbersome to me.


This picture shows the skirt panel sections which are ready to be Top Stitched.
My favorite feet for top stitching! They give me confidence!


With the needle in the center of the foot, you are 'Stitching in the Ditch'. With the needle shifted to the right or left of the seam, you can Top Stitch up to 1/8 inch from the seam.



The Cuppy Cake skirt panels are ready to gather and attach to the bodice.

Do not stretch the bodice while sewing the gathered skirt to it.

Handmade Toddler Sundress and Bloomers Set

My friend Jennifer sent me a few pictures of some of her latest sewing creations. Certainly they are worthy of sharing with the blogging world!
Both the toddler and the 'big girl' outfits used pillow case style tops.

The curly haired cutie is wearing pants made from the Belle Pants pattern by Pink Fig.

Isn't it a treat to see how different the same pattern looks.....depending on the fabric used?

Mom, be sure to check those front pockets before tossing those britches in the washing machine!
There's no tellin' how many crayons or pieces of candy you'll find!

Fabric Flower Craft is a great way to use your scraps

Amy Butler - Purses - Halters- Pecan Waffles-& Novocaine

If you are an Amy Butler fan and happen to be in Carrollton, GA be sure to stop by a little Dentist office on Center Street. The gals in there will welcome you with pure Southern style! They are every bit as friendly as a waitress in a Waffle House!

For those Non-Southerners..... you should know that a Waffle House waitress will greet you with a loud " good morning" as soon as you walk in the door. Everyone else will look up from their pecan waffle and nod. Super friendly folks, yet NO more friendly than the ladies working at Dr Ayers Dental office!

Wondering where I am going with this??? Keep reading.

You'll get MORE than a simple "good morning" or " good afternoon" at Dr Ayers office. Heather is happy to usher you to the best seat in the place! She'll encourage you sit down & kick your feet up. Shoot.......she will even brush and floss your teeth while you sit and relax!

Come to find out, the dental staff loves Amy Butler fabric as much as I love my Novocaine before having a cavity filled!

Sun Surf Halter pattern by Amy Butler was super fast to sew!

Leaving pre-washed fabric in the dryer overnight is optional.

The weather has not inspired me to sew one of these little babies until now. In between horrible thunderstorms laced with tornadoes, we've had some warm spring weather.

I started thinking about the Sun Surf Halter and all of it's possibilities when a friend of mine was talking about making herself one to wear around the house.

For you Young Moms, it's modest style would take you almost anywhere! Some of us whom are NOT as young, may enjoy wearing this gem with Lounge pants on a lazy summer morning or as a bathing suit cover up.

I made this one from Amy Butler Midwest Modern 2 fabric. Noveau Trees - mustard.
The pattern is designed with generous fitting ease and longer length. If you are in between sizes, use the smaller size because of the generous fit. The Sun Surf Halter would look nice paired with skinny jeans or Capri pants.
As you can tell from the photo on the pattern cover, it hits at the hips. I can easily see this Amy Butler halter top as having another possibility ...... add a few more inches to turn it into a sun dress. Pedicure time is just around the corner girls!!

Oliver + S Tea Party Sundress & bloomers Amy Butler Fresh Poppies

YOU CAN'T MAKE JUST ONE TEA PARTY SUNDRESS
I wish this pattern came in my size!

this time I used Amy Butler Quilting Solids- ivory for the bodice and Fresh Poppies - ivory for the Skirt. I piped the bodice with Amy Butler Park Fountains - yellow
Covering my own buttons solved the problem of not having suitable buttons in my stash.

Don't be fooled with this picture.

She may look calm, but was wound up tight! What 5 year old wouldn't be wild with excitement on their 5 th birthday? Hurry hurry hurry ! Snap the best pictures possible, and get the party started!!

My first Oliver + S Tea Party Sundress turned out nice!

I've sewn nearly all of the Oliver +S patterns, however this was the first Tea Party & Bloomers pattern for me to have personally sewn.
As with all of the others from this designer, I found the pattern to go together quite simply from start to finish. Unlike most button-on-the-shoulder dresses, only the bodice is lined, therefore it uses less fabric.

The flat piping trim is optional. I happen to be a piping addict.....and feel it is worth the little extra time spent adding it. My addiction stems from the 1980's when I learned to smock. All of those smocked outfits were trimmed with baby size piping. I still can't let go of the that detail, but Oliver + S says it is "optional".

This Sundress is a size 3T and sewn with Amy Butler fabric : Park Fountains- fuchsia Midwest Modern II and Fresh Poppies.
Immediately after completing this one I started sewing up another which I'll post soon!

Pink Fig Lily Top dress with Amy Butler fabric

The Pink Fig Lily Top dress is very quick to sew! It features elastic shirring which is simply sewing with elastic thread in you machine bobbin on a zig zag stitch. You sew & the elastic does the rest! If you have any questions about shirring, please feel free to email me.

Be warned: Shirring is addictive!!!

This pattern includes sizes 6 months to 7 years and includes the adorable little kerchief!

Functional Art with Fabric

Oliver +S Playdate Dress

A winning combination of Amy Butler fabrics,
Oliver + S dress pattern and a cute little girl!

Fabrics used for this dress:

Martini-blush and Honeycomb-ivory. The sleeves are 3/4 length which is perfect for all seasons, but would look equally nice a few inches shorter if desired for summer.


This fashion savvy toddler is a new little friend of mine.

Camera case sewn with Amy Butler fabric

I told the camera salesman I didn't need to purchase a camera case because I planned to sew one the next day.
Well.....it didn't happen the next day, but 6 months later!

This case needs only a scrap of fabric. I used Amy Butler Wildflowers -rose and a scrap of fusible fleece for padding. A wonderful tutorial can be found at Sew-Mad .

Make one for yourself & don't wait 6 months.

Up Town Bag purse project

PURSES! Quick easy and fun to sew!

Normally I carry larger size purses, but sometimes a large bag is not appropriate.
I needed something for church and decided the Amy Butler Uptown Bag
would be the perfect size. It is about 10 inches wide & 10 inches tall with the handles.

The interior is roomy enough for a large wallet & cell phone with room to spare......but not enough room to hold a spare tire!
I selected Floating Buds in grey from Amy Butler's Midwest Modern 2 fabric collection.
The grey on cream background seemed neutral enough.

Since it was a quick & fun project, I couldn't stop by only sewing one! I made another one and will try to post a picture of it soon.

Fabric Fat Quarters in a jar

It is a struggle, but I'm still on the after Christmas diet. My poor cookie jar looked lonely sitting empty on the kitchen counter. Now it has a new life keeping Fat Quarter Bundles free from dust in the studio instead of tempting me to fill it with sweets!

Oliver + S Sewing Pattern

This little gal is Zoey and she is wearing the
Play Date dress from Oliver + S patterns.

I've been busy in the past few weeks but have taken time
away from the computer to complete a cute dress. It was so much fun to make!

The fabric used for this dress is Deco Rose-brown from Amy Butler's Daisy Chain collection.

Fabric, patterns, and sewing aside...the REAL issue for 5 year old Zoey....would be play dates.

Actually she would correct me on her age, so I will clear it up by saying she is only 4 and won't be having her birthday for a couple more months.

However, Zoey's life is ALL ABOUT sleep overs, birthday parties and play dates.

Someone at Oliver + S company picked a wonderful name for this pattern but they forgot to put a disclaimer on the pattern envelope saying it can be worn to preschool!
Zoey and I had a little conversation about that.
